Superb Market is an aspiring supermarket themed gallery activation and pop-up shop aiming to serve up locally sourced, non-GMO, free range artists to the Milwaukee area.
We aim to elevate the mundane tasks of day to day life by emulating spaces that may typically go underappreciated, in this case grocery stores, by filling them with a healthy sense of joie de vivre and humor. By focusing on the supermarket as an artistic subject, we aim to highlight the often unnoticed elements that shape our experiences of shopping and raise them to the status of art, particularly focused on the elegantly simple signage and organization systems and bright, expressive colors present throughout packaging and displays.
We’re drawn to the idea of focusing on the commercial space of the grocery store due to the ways that gallery spaces, particularly their visitors, are confronted by both the commercial and spiritual or creative value of what they’re observing. Within Superb Market, viewers are not relegated simply to observation but invited to be active participants in the installation, whether through talking to the artists at their market stands or even being invited to purchase and take work from the shelves home with them. As they navigate the space and purchase work, they engage with the art in a deeply personal way, creating a dialogue between the mundane and the meaningful.
The work also aims to confront the contradictions between the often perceived inaccessibility of galleries to both artists and the public as compared to the accessibility of more commonly accessed spaces, welcoming our audience to feel more confident interacting with professional artistic spaces on a personal level.
Our founding members are Milwaukee-based artists Jasper Huber, Chandler Hougan, Rowan Rohwer, Cyprien Morin, Maggie Carroll, Kenzie Swangstu, Sophia Holmquist and Lauren Freitag.
